With the Oscars coming up tomorrow, I finally decided I needed to finish up this article that I have been slowly working on for a while. Rather than talk about who’s likely to win the Oscars, it seems more worthwhile to stick to my guns and just provide a list of my favorite films from last year. I should note that in 2011 I think I saw fewer movies than I have in any other year of my life. The basic reasons that contributed to this record-low were

  1. the age of our daughter (4) preventing us from going to the movie theater often (babysitters cost mucho dinero these days)
  2. higher quality television choices, and
  3. a generally uninteresting slate of films released across the entire year.

So with these caveats, I’ve decided to write a little bit about what were my favorite and least favorite films of the year. Granted, these aren’t “the best” or “the worst” but the ones I personally would recommend or chastise. (more…)

For several years I have watched The Mentalist. Other than my wife and myself, I do not know anyone who else who watches it. This disparity is interesting, considering that The Mentalist has been one of the most watched shows on television in the past few years. It is also currently winning the largest audience among a Thursday night lineup full of historically popular shows. So what is it all about?

On the surface, The Mentalist looks like any other crime show on television. I usually am not drawn in by ubiquitous crime shows like CSI and Law and Order. When I lived in Peru last year, however, The Mentalist had an interesting ad campaign. One of the things that initially appealed to my curiosity was how the wrist watch of the show’s star, Simon Baker, was being promoted as a glamorous item you could buy. (more…)

I was recently thinking about George Clooney. For the past few years he seems to have been in a movie almost every year that has been hailed by critics as “one of the best movies of the year.” I write that facetiously as my wife and I often joke about this type of shameless marketing. Nonetheless, he is now getting praise for his performance in Up in the Air, a film being hailed with platitudes like being “one of the best movies of the year.” If you don’t believe me, just check out the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

I haven’t seen the movie so I don’t really know if it’s deserving of the praise. What I find interesting though is that there hasn’t seem to have been an actor in a long time who is approaching a sort of Tom Hanks-like popularity for both a substantial portion of the population and film buffs alike. If you don’t remember the Tom Hanks era of movie dominance, you are probably pretty young. (more…)
